ITANAGAR, Feb 1: The All Sagalee Students’ Union (ASSU) celebrated its silver Jubilee year cum foundation day from January 26 to 30 last. Delegates from all four circles of Sagalee Constituencies participated in the programme.
Vice president APSU Likha Takar and President APPDSU Teli Duli inaugurated the programme.
Donyi Polo Mission School, Sagalee won the overall trophy trophy for the five day event and also won the cultural competition. Don Bosco School Sagalee became the winner of the literary competition, while Govt Secondary School Parang won the games and sports competition.

NEW DELHI/ITANAGAR, Feb 1: Agitating over the killing of late Nido Tania, a 19 year-
The students from eight North East states and few liberal persons from the mainland also joined the protest which swelled to two thousands in number.
Sources from Delhi informed that protest march started from the shop where the incident took place and culminated at Lajpat Nagar Police Station. They gathered at outside the police station chanted slogan against Delhi Police and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. It is said that Delhi Police dropped Tania at the place of incident after interrogation which prompted shopkeepers to beat him again before he succumbed to his injury.
“I am from Arunachal and Northeast not from Japan and China, we are true Indian like any other Indian in Delhi” said a protester.
“We are not treated equals here how can a guy call us Nepali, Chinky or Chinese because we have Mongoloid features, how can one mock at another person only because of his hair style” questioned Tapang Tara Liyak, a student from Arunchal.
ASUD President Taba Doni informed The Arunachal Times over the telephone that entire NE people expressed their solidarity with aggrieved family and people of Arunachal in pursuit of justice for late Tania a racial victim in the heart of national capital.
Earlier the student community called off the protest on the written assurance given by Delhi Police to the students to take appropriate action against the perpetrators after post mortem report. However the protesters threatened to intensify the agitation if their demands are not met in stipulated time.
“We cannot let our brother’s life go in vain and we shall not rest till justice is done! But it is also an eye opener for the people of the 8 sister states that having inner conflicts among ourselves, it won’t do any good for the region. His life has shown us a reason, which we need to stand together,” said Duyu Tabo a protester who participated in ABP news debate over racism.
Police said they were waiting for the viscera report while two shopkeepers identified as Farhan and Akram have been arrested.
At Itanagar, it seems the rumbling chorus of North East people especially Arunachalee living in New Delhi against racial discrimination reached the state Capital as Nyishi Elite Society(NES) stirred the protest march here today demanding justice and exemplary punishment to the culprits involved in the killing of late Tania. Various students’ organizations and community based organizations, and people from all walks of life expressed their solidarity by joining the protest march. The protest march started from Akashdeep at Ganga here and culminated at Raj Bhawan gate. The agitated protestors calling Mainland Indian as racist treated its own people from Northeast as foreigners by calling as Chinese and Nepali. Venting their anger against alienate treatment given to NE people, few protestors also pelted bottles and stone at Raj Bhawan wall, however no injury was reported.
Meanwhile, many students in Delhi and Itanagar condemned Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs Ninong Ering for alleged loose comment on racism during interview with national TV channels. Ninong who is MP for Arunachal East Lok Shabha seat allegedly denied considering late Tania’s death as racial attack.
Condemning the minister’s comment, the student’s community said that minister should
know the ground reality before giving loose comment. It said his comment hurt the
sentiment of many agitated students from the region including the aggrieved family
members. Ironically Ninong denied any racial discrimination on NE people by the mainland

Governor, CM mourn death of young student
ITANAGAR, Feb 1: Joining people of Arunachal Pradesh, Governor Lt. Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma condoled the sad demise of Nido Tania. The State has lost a youth, who had a very bright future, he said in a condolence message. He has directed the State Director General of Police to take up the matter with his counterpart in Delhi at the earliest to expedite the case and bring those involved to book. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also asked the Delhi Police to submit a report at the earliest.
Chief Minister Nabam Tuki today expressed shock at the death of Arunachalee student Nido Tania. “The persons involved in the incident which resulted in death of student will surely get the punishment they deserve. We need to be patient and allow the law to take its own course,” he said.
In a message to MLA Nido Pavitra, the Chief Minister said “The news of unfortunate and untimely demise of your loving son Nido Tania in a tragic incident at Delhi has come as shock to me. It pains my heart to write to you at this moment of extreme grief. I humbly endure to share with you the saddest times of your life though I know that it would be hard to do so and ease the pain you and your family are going through. I am aware, how painful it is to you to be deprived of the love and affection of a son and that too in his prime youth and the futility of these words of condolences.
I hope my humble words of consolation would ease the grief even if a little.”
“At this moment of grief, I on behalf of me, my family, colleagues in the Government and people of Arunachal Pradesh extend our solidarity with you and share the pain inflicted on you and your family by this irreparable loss. I pray the Almighty God to bestow you and your family with strength to bear the loss of your beloved son. May the departed soul rest in peace in his heavenly abode.”
All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union strongly condemned the racial attack and murder of Nido Tania and urged the Delhi Govt and police to immediately arrest the culprits and give them stringent punishment. The apex union also deep mourned the death of Tania and conveyed condolence to bereaved family. AAPSU also asked the state Govt to pursue the Centre and Delhi Govt to book the culprits immediately.
Arunachal Pradesh Food and Civil Supplies Officers Welfare Association (APFCSOWA) strongly condemned the brutal murder of Arunachalee boy Nido Tania by miscreants. While demanding immediate arrest of the all the culprits, the Association conveyed condolence to the bereaved family.
ABVP Delhi also registered strong protest at the Lajpat Nagar police station against the cold blooded murder of Nido Tania. ABVP Delhi State Secretary Saket Bahuguna demanded an immediate arrest of all the culprits involved in it and expressed solidarity with all the students from north east. “We will work to ensure that justice is delivered in this case at the earliest”, he said.
Apatani Youth Association (AYA) condemned dastardly murder of Nido Tania. AYA demands culprits should be punished and justice be delivered at the earliest. While mourning the death of young student, the Association prayed to Almighty god to bestow enough strength to the family to bear the irreparable loss.
The All Arunachal Pradesh Public Transport Union (AAPPTU) has expressed shock over the death of a young Arunachalee boy in the heart of the Capital of India. It said, we strongly condemn such attack upon a young kid with racial remark that too in the Capital of the country.
Urging state government to ensure safety of Arunachalee people living in Capital or elsewhere, it said it is a matter of serious concern that people from the region are not being treated as Indians.
The Arunachal Unemployed Engineers' Association (AUEA) also appealing the state government to pressure Delhi government for booking the culprits said, this time a young lad, Nido Tania, was beaten to death and we don't know how long this kind of unwanted discrimination will continue.
Padmashree Silverine Swer passes away
ITANAGAR, Feb 1: A true pioneer of grass root level education in Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya's oldest voter and first Padmashree awardee Silverine Swer, passed away at the age of 103 at her residence in Shillong today after a brief illness, family sources said.
Kong Sil, as she is affectionately called, passed away around 10:40 am at her "step phyrnai" home at Riatsamthiah, a few hundred metres above the Umkhrah river.
A veteran who saw four wars -
Conferred with a Padamshree award in 1990, Late Silverine Swer completed her Bachelor in Arts (BA) and Bachelor in Teaching (BT) from Kolkata University before starting her service career from 1932 in various capacities.
From being a High school teacher to being the assistant Controller of rationing during the world war (1944–1949) under Assam government, Silverine Swer also had served in the erstwhile NEFA (Now Arunachal Pradesh) for fifteen years (1953–1968). She was the Chief Social Education Officer, and Assistant Education officer.
Initially she had served Arunachal Pradesh as Chief Social Education Officer on a three year contract in a newly opened Community Development Project at Pasighat, (Mirem village) in then NEFA days and had joined the service in March 1953. This project was one of thirteen pilot projects selected for the backward areas of different states in India for the integrated development of community life. Later she continued her service and was transferred to the Education Department with a change of designation as Assistant Education Officer. She was the Pioneering Principal of the teachers Training Institute (Buniadi Shiksha Bhavan) at Changlang and Tirap districts for 11 years and retired from the service in 1968.
She was chairperson of International year for Women’s Conference, 1979, State Commissioner (G), Bharat Scout and Guides Association and was also nominated as an executive council member of NEHU for three years till 1994.

ITANAGAR, Feb 1: Arunachal Pradesh Government has announced ex-
Chief Minister Nabam Tuki convened a high level meeting at his offices here this morning and ordered that the grant be placed at the disposal of the Papum Pare Deputy Commissioner for disbursement. The meeting was attended by the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police and the state’s Advocate General.
CM has appealed to the Union Home Minister to depute a team of senior officers of MHA for on spot inspection with the district administrations of Assam and Arunachal.
He also requested the MHA to entrust investigation to an independent agency while appealing the people of both the states to maintain peace and tranquility.
Meanwhile, representatives of Krishti Kendras of Itanagar and Naharlagun and Namghars of Nirjuli and Naharlagun, on behalf of the Assamese community residing in Arunachal Pradesh, today called on Chief Minister Nabam Tuki at his offices here. The Assamese representatives while mourning the deaths of people in the Tarasso incident expressed solidarity with peace loving citizens of Arunachal Pradesh and extended all cooperation to the state government and the people in maintaining peace and calm.
Interacting freely with the representatives – Bishnu Prasad Deka (Namghar Nirjuli), Ranadhir Talukdar (Krishti Kendra Naharlagun), D K Saikia (Krishti Kendra Itanagar) and Jayanta Bora (Namghar Naharlagun) – the Chief Minister reiterated that the Tarasso incident shouldn’t be treated as a major confrontation between the people of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
“This is a singular incident of grave violence and will be treated with contempt by the government and law will take its own course. No one found guilty will be spared,” he assured.
Citing the close association of the people of Assam and Arunachal, the Chief Minister said contributions of Assamese community in the evolution and development of Arunachal Pradesh cannot be measured and asserted that he personally has highest regards for the Assamese people, particularly the teachers of early days, who shaped the future of Arunachal Pradesh.

There is ambiguity, especially when disqualified candidates can make it to Staff Selection Commission (SSC) then how it is impossible for them to make it in the state department examination. We feel that, there are certainly undeserving candidates in the qualified lists.

KHONSA, Feb 01: Peba Lomri of West Siang district was declared the “Best Boxer” in Senior Men’s Category in the first ever State Level Boxing Championship which concluded here today.

Reh celebrated with pomp and gaiety
ROING, Feb 1: “REH” the main festival of Idu Mishmi Community of Dibang and Lower Dibang Valley District was celebrated with traditional pomp and gaiety through out the two districts. Chowna Mein, Minister of Finance, Planning and PWD, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh attended the festival as Chief Guest at Central Reh Celebration at Rehko here today.
Lauding the rich cultural presentation on the occasion with traditional attires, varied handlooms & handicrafts and exhibition of flora & fauna, varieties of local delicacies by the people of Idu Mishmi Community showcasing their inherited rich cultural heritage and traditions, Chowna Mein said, “Handlooms of the Idu Mishmi Tribe are one of the best in Arunachal Pradesh” and called upon the new generation “to keep it alive and pass on to next generation”. He also said that the spiritual healing system of the tribe performed by the Igu (Priest) is very strong and appealing and he expressed willingness to have documentation of it so that this rich old heritage and culture is kept recorded and does not dies down in future. Calling upon the younger generation to maintain the age old culture and tradition, he said, “the younger generation has a responsibility to preserve the rich culture and tradition”.
Mein also said, “with the cultural revolution, our culture has improvised a lot and we should adopt the good things to beautify it more”. He further advocated for introduction of local dialogue (language) of every tribes of the state as the third language in their respective area in the elementary education in the schools so that it does not get lost in the fast growing globalization.
He further said, “Along with cultural revolution, economic revolution need to be brought and to do that we need political will”. We should fully utilized the land bank that is enormously available with us for economic upliftment of the people, he added.
Mein also lauded the Enjalumenda Women’s Empowerment Forum, who is spearheading the campaign against drug menace in the community besides fighting for the rights of the women and against domestic violence. He encouraged them not to be disheartened saying “I am with you and ready to help you” and appealed all the public leaders and elite groups to support them in their endeavour to get rid the society from the drug menace which is a great challenge and not an easy task to do. He further advocated for carrying out mass awareness campaign against the drugs and use of opium.
He further divulged that a proposal will be kept in the 14th Finance Commission to preserve and improvise the Historical Sites in the state for more tourist attraction.
Mibom Pertin, President (ABK) LDV District Unit attending the Central Reh Celebration as Guest of Honour said Idu Mishmi’s are the pioneers of costume, weaving skills and expertise in handlooms and handicrafts. He expressed hope that the Reh festival celebration has usher in brotherhood, peace and oneness among the two major tribes of the district by driving away misunderstanding and mistrust that existed between the two brethren. He further said that the ABK district unit and IMCLS has a big role to play to keep this brotherhood and oneness among the two communities intact disallowing any unwanted elements to disturb it. He also called upon the youths to abstain from the use of drugs, opium and to limit the excessive use of alcohols during social gathering and individual functions which according to him are the root cause of fighting, accidents and other unwanted happenings.
On the occasion, Enju Linggi, President IMCLS read out the Mythology of Reh Festival and narrated its significance. Munga Mimi, President and Arjun Mepo, General Secretary, Central Reh Celebration Committee, Roing also spoke on the occasion.
Two CD Albums namely, “Ecopa” produced by Shri Yona Mele and sponsored by Mukut Mithi, MP (RS) and “Aalanu” produced by D.S. Production on Idu Modern songs were released by the Chief Guest on the occasion.

Candlelight march to spread peace and harmony
ITANAGAR, Feb 1: After the breaking out of unfortunate Taraso incident, more than hundreds of youth lined the streets of Capital City Itanagar yesterday evening taking out a candle light march intending to spread peace, harmony and fraternal coexistence between Assam and Arunachal.
The march started at the Akashdeep market complex and concluded at the IG Park, Itanagar. Leading the march, Kop Camdir Tai said, “The walk represents peace and unity, which is deteriorated with the unfortunate incident of Tarasso”.
"We are taking out this candlelight march to recall unity, peace, and harmony amongst all the youth across border," Camdir Tai explains. "Not just Arunachal or Assam, but all youth. So we're out here tonight preparing for the march, which is solely dedicated as a symbol of peace and unity beyond every possible conflict."
The march was to express grief at the death of 10 people at Taraso and to demand a peaceful approach to the consequences.
Since the unfortunate incident occurred at Tarasso the tension due to bandh calls and indefinite economic blockade is threatening the normal life of both the states. The march was voluntarily participated from different walks of life. Meanwhile, Camdir Tai appealed the people from both the state to maintain peace to avoid further uproars.
